Definition:
A situational appraisal of an individual's occupational skills, characteristics and traits needed
for successful job placement and performance.
1. Preliminary Vocational Assessment Consultation.
For no charge, a member of the Division staff will provide:
- A brief review of selected records
- Consult with the DVR counselor
- Make recommendations with respect to appropriate assessment strategies, and estimate costs
2. Initial Vocational Assessment:
Goal: To clarify assessment goals, potential for successful outcomes, potential
timelines, and to estimate costs.
Outcomes:
- Clarification of participant-driven outcomes, timelines, and service cost estimates
- Provide a basis for determining the need for further evaluation (e.g., a comprehensive vocational assessment)
The initial vocational assessment includes, but not limited to:
- A complete review of records
- An Interview with the participant
- An interview (may be by telephone) with the DVR counselor
- A written report integrating all information and generating recommendations
(at the discretion of the participant and the DVR counselor), an exit interview/panel meeting
3. Comprehensive Vocational Assessment:
Goal: To clarify the strengths and interests that the participant brings to bear on the job seeking process.
Outcomes:
- To identify or clarify vocational or employment goals
- To identify functional limitations and barriers which may impede progress toward meeting those goals
- To identify strategies to implement recommendations
The comprehensive vocational assessment is based upon the individual needs of the participant, but may
include the following components:
- Extended interviews with the participant, family members, significant others, previous employers and/or educators, the DVR counselor, and other key individuals
- Behavioral observation
- Limited situational assessment, including hands-on vocational assessment using selected work samples
- Task analysis and worksite analysis of previous or prospective jobs
- Evaluation of vocational and/or educational aptitudes, skills, and interests using qualitative or standardized assessment strategies
- Recommendations for additional medical rehabilitation services (e.g., speech pathology, occupational or physical therapy, neuropsychology, medical specialists) requiring authorization by DVR MSW
- Recommendation for a Plan
- A feedback interview or panel for the participant and DVR counselor
- Recommendations may also include Employability Preparation, Job Coaching, or Job Placement Services.
4. Job Station (part time, less intense supervision; part time, intensive supervision):
Goal: To provide extended opportunities to evaluate the suitability of various types of jobs for a participant through job tryouts.
Outcomes:
- To allow participants to sample jobs
- To estimate the capacity of the participant to acquire various job skills, use supervision appropriately,
manage the psychosocial environment, and other critical variables
- To identify useful intervention strategies which may be employed by either the participants or a coach
- To identify the learning curve for the acquisition of vocational behavior
